iMac G5

Introduced: August 2004
Terminated: May 2005

Description

The first iMac with a G5 processor, the iMac G5 had a new case.  Everything was now contained in a two-inch thick case that also housed the flat-panel monitor.  It was available in three configurations.  The low-end configuration had a 17” LCD, ran at 1.6Ghz, had an 80Gb hard drive and a Combo drive.  The midrange configuration had a 17” LCD, ran at 1.8Ghz, had an 80Gb hard drive and a SuperDrive.  The high-end configuration had a 20” LCD, ran at 1.8Ghz, had a 160Gb hard drive and a SuperDrive.

History

The iMac G4 took its design cues from the Apple Cinema display line and managed to house the entire computer in a very small space.  Additionally, it was a much faster computer than the iMac G4 before it and offered features like a faster memory bus and a new audio port that could act as an optical digital audio output.

  • Might want to update this page. It’s pretty much out of whack.

    - Picture is of a Power Mac.
    - “History - The iMac G4 took its design cues from the Apple Cinema display line”. That would be the iMac G5.
    - All the specs are for the Power Mac, not the iMacG5.

  • When you need performance for things like playing 3D games, editing HD video, or running design software, the discrete AMD Radeon HD graphics in iMac go to work. You see more frames per second and experience better responsiveness. With the AMD Radeon HD 6970M, the top-of-the-line 27-inch iMac offers the best graphics of any all-in-one. But no matter which iMac you choose, you’re guaranteed superior graphics performance.-Jonathan Berkowitz
